Wheel lathes are designed for turning wheel pairs of rolling stock of railway transport: wagons, locomotives, electric locomotives and diesel locomotives. On equipment of this type, solid-rolled and bandaged wheels are turned along the rolling profile, ridge and inner end during the manufacture of new and restoration of worn-out wheelsets during operation. The first generation wheel lathe can machine not only wheels, but also wheel axles, as well as brake discs of any position. For this, the wheel lathe has two support systems. For heavy-duty machining, the tool is mounted directly on the upper slide of the support. The areas located closer to the center of the wheel were machined with a retractable tool holder. Equipment of new modifications allows turning wheels without removing axle box bearings, as well as processing axle journals and seats for thrust bearings. It is also possible to machine the axles of wheelsets with limited requirements for the cleanliness of processing. The seating surface of the wheel center for the tire is processed with a special tool made of a rubber-like elastic material to ensure the required roughness. The turning of worn out wheelsets without rolling out from under the bogies of a locomotive, a carriage, a diesel locomotive or an electric locomotive is carried out on under-rail wheel lathes driven by a traction motor directly through the driven gear wheel of the traction reducer located on the axle of the wheelset.
